In 2001 Ducati celebrated its 75th anniversary, and on September 30th at Imola, at during the last race of the Superbike World Championship, it decided to commemorate one of its most significant victories.

After earning two wins in the previous season, again riding a Ducati, another Australian rider, Troy Bayliss, makes made his full-time debut in the World Superbike Championship in 2001.

Riding the 996 F01, Bayliss won the Riders' title with six wins and nine podiums to his credit and, together with teammate Rubén Xaus, led Ducati to win the Manufacturers' title for the fourth consecutive year.

This is was the last season in which the 996 R equipped with the Testastretta engine that had replaced the previous Desmoquattro is was used. Maintaining his distinctive number 21 in subsequent seasons, Troy Bayliss won two more world titles with Ducati in 2006 and 2008, becoming the second most victorious rider in World Superbike history.
