Building on the successes of the 851, Ducati increased the displacement of the engine with the 888 F91 by entrusting the official bikes to American Doug Polen and Frenchman Raymond Roche.

Conceived as one of the first motorcycles to include significant use of carbon fiber and composite materials to reduce weight, the 888 F91 dominated the scene by winning twenty-three of the twenty-six races in the World Superbike Championship in 1991.

Doug Polen, riding bike number 23, won the Riders' title and Ducati won the first of two Manufacturers' titles achieved with the 888. Such clear dominance in World Superbike, just three years after the creation of the championship, propels Ducati to the top of competitive motorcycle racing.
