On April 3, 1988, at the first race of the World Superbike Championship at the Donington circuit, the 851 made its debut with a water-cooled 4-valve twin-cylinder engine.
Designed by Gianluigi Mengoli and Massimo Bordi, the 851 immediately took first place thanks to Marco Lucchinelli.

Only two years later, French rider Raymond Roche scored eight season victories and won the title of World Superbike Champion.

The competitiveness of the Ducati 851 F90 is underscored by no less than sixteen podiums won in twenty-six races, which also included Giancarlo Falappa's victory, also obtained at the Donington circuit.
The rider from Jesi raced for Ducati until his retirement in 1994, after numerous victories riding the Borgo Panigale "Reds," the last of which at Misano with the 916.
