HomeThe Desmosedici GP16, which for the second consecutive season was entrusted to the all-Italian pairing of Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone, was unveiled in February 2016. Ducati Corse boss Gigi Dall'Igna called it an 'evolution' of the previous bikes, but it soon proved to be the fastest bike on the straights with its extreme power.
The fins remained from the previous year, albeit now coloured to match the predominantly white and red Desmosedici, but these aerodynamic appendages were beginning to have a dramatic effect on the bike's overall performance. Dall'Igna had clearly paved the way for a new technical development in MotoGP, against which all other manufacturers were catching up, and which marked an important turning point in the history of motorbike racing.
In the tenth race of the season in Austria, Ducati dominated all sessions and the race, but the rider who took the first victory for Ducati since Casey Stoner won for the team in the 2010 Australian Grand Prix was Iannone, who passed his team-mate on the penultimate corner of the last lap to take his first MotoGP win.
In the 17th round at Sepang in Malaysia, it was Dovizioso's turn to win on the GP16. The rider from Forlimpopoli I got the better of Valentino Rossi in wet conditions to put the seal on his first win with Ducati and his first victory since Donington Park with Honda in 2009.
