The Soul of the Diavel

Under the muscles, a bike you would never have expected
The Diavel conception stems from the need to combine a "muscle bike", whose volumes are sometimes deliberately exaggerated, with the Ducati philosophy implemented in every project: exceptional level of handling, high technological content, a powerful but usable engine thanks to different riding modes and instantly recognisable aesthetics.
The first challenge the Ducati designers had to overcome was to widen the range of use of the vehicle, which could be transformed from a "muscle bike" and become an excellent interpreter on winding roads as well as a reliable partner for medium-haul trips. They commenced a meticulous project to optimise weight distribution and research the dynamic thrust centres on the vehicle, to achieve something that had never been accomplished on this bike before. They were able to count on an important helping hand given by the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II rear tyre that, in spite of its large size, gives Diavel a great level of handling and responsiveness, also thanks to the EPT technology used (Enhanced Patch Technology).
The saddle also ensures excellent comfort; just 770 mm from the ground, the feeling on board is that you are always sat in the absolute central position on the bike. This is the result of yet another detail given particular attention during the design phase: the ergonomic aspect of the rider's position on the seat is designed focusing on comfort and perfect integration of both rider and passenger.
Engine optimisation went hand in hand with the development of the vehicle, both in terms of performance and of aesthetics. Starting from the Testastretta 11° on the Multistrada, a series of measures were implemented to significantly increase output and integrate the engine within the stylish streamlined look of the Diavel.
This masterly work led to the creation of a 162 hp engine for the Diavel and an exhaust tone worthy of a surprisingly muscular motorcycle, without compromising on the regularity of power delivery.
The increase in output was achieved by using 1198-derived pistons with a higher compression ratio and by optimising the exhaust unit to a maniacal level. The fuel system used is the same as that on the Multistrada 1200 even though, in the case of the Diavel, the injectors are housed under the throttle to improve fluid dynamics in order to achieve higher performance. The final important intervention was made to the cooling system fins and their position, increasing the coolant pump diameter and increasing the efficiency of the entire system.
No changes were made to the gear ratios and the only interventions concerned the strengthening of the materials used for some of the gears, which undergo greater exertion given the increased level of output.
To complete the work, a series of aesthetic changes were made to integrate the engine element within the streamlined Diavel styling, whose impressive shape is one of its most appealing features.
The clutch, water pump and belt covers have all been redesigned and sport a more rounded shape. The belt covers also feature slits to improve the cooling air flow to the belts and embellished with an aesthetic metal frieze. The magnesium head covers are painted black, like all the other non-structural parts visible.
Last, but by no means least, are the electronics, which play an important role on the Diavel: the most evident change is the presence of two instrument panels, which not only characterise the aesthetics of the bike, but also make reading the onboard information much easier.
The Diavel also sports the Riding Modes, which allow riders to exploit the bike to the full in every situation, changing its character quite considerably to adapt it to practically every possible condition. The DTC (Ducati Traction Control) and ABS increase the reliability and confidence when using the bike: while its large dimensions can be rather intimidating, once you are sat on the saddle you will experience a mix of unique sensations while enjoying its easy handling.
